Between Quotations

Lately, I have been immersing myself in nature as a way to reconnect with inspiration for my writing. After visits to St James’s Park – where I took this beautiful photo of a black swan – and Regent’s Park, I felt compelled to capture my experience of urban nature in verse.

Between Quotations is a quiet reflection on stillness, language, and the intangible spaces between. Inspired by a grey morning, a heron, and the silence between songs. I hope you enjoy reading this poem as much as I enjoyed writing it…

Between Quotations

I’m static between songs,
Between echoes of words -
In between quotations,
Where meaning flickers in the void of silence.

Grey heron poised on a grey day,
Black swan gliding through liquid light.
A parakeet catches my gaze.
Reflections multiply,
A never-ending series of selves.
Branches weave the frame -
A net of patience,
A map of stillness -
Waiting to be filled with meaning.

I’m static between songs,
Between echoes of words -
In between quotations,
Where meaning flickers in the void of silence.

I put my trust in something else,
Something unnamed,
A force untamed,
But listening -
Waiting to fill the void with meaning.
It’s static between songs,
Between echoes of words -
In between quotations.
That’s what gives me meaning,
And finally fills the void of silence.
