Reviving the 1940’s: Timeless Fashion for the Modern Day

In this post I want to focus on my favourite fashion era, the 1940’s. I have always been drawn to this era of resilience, creativity, and unyielding style. Characterised by elegant simplicity and practical glamour, the 1940’s offers a timeless aesthetic that can be seamlessly woven into contemporary wardrobes. Here’s how I incorporate 1940’s fashion into a (somewhat) modern-day look…

Elegant Dresses

Tea dresses and A-line skirts were a staple in the 1940’s and are a classic option for a glamorous yet modest summer look in modern day. Here’s one of my favourite tea dresses, from The Seamstress of Bloomsbury in a subtle floral print, paired with a retro bag and handmade jacket.

Statement Outerwear

For winter, opt for a structured, fitted coat with strong shoulders. Adding a touch of faux fur or a silk scarf around the collar can instantly elevate your look and give a nod to the past. I love to pair leather gloves with a fitted coat to add an edge to any of my winter outfits.

Tailored Silhouettes

The 1940’s celebrated a feminine silhouette and emphasised a tightly fitted waist, perfectly shown in a tailored jacket. This is one of my favourite jackets, bought in a second hand shop in Covent garden…

Footwear

Footwear wise, sensible classic shoes were all the rage in the 40’s. My favourites, Mary Janes, are a perfect balance between style and comfort and can be paired with a formal or casual look. I probably have far too many pairs… these ones are from Jones’ The Bootmakers.

Hair & Makeup

One of my go-to hairstyles is a low bun, parted in the centre, with two victory rolls – a 1940’s classic. Some say this hairstyle is ageing but I find it’s a perfect addition when going for a mature, elegant look. Much to my enthusiasm, this hairstyle proudly made a come back in the Carolina Herrera 2013 Fall fashion show. I dye my hair either black or deep violet to create a stark contrast between my skin and hair and emphasise a bold lip or statement eye.

Even during wartime, 1940’s fashion didn’t shy away from a touch of glamour. In particular, a bold red lipstick can add a touch of Old Hollywood vintage charm to your look. For daytime, keeping the blush soft and avoiding heavy eyeliner can prevent a red lip makeup look being overpowering.

The make-do-and-mend mentality of the 1940’s aligns perfectly with today’s focus on sustainable fashion. Incorporating 1940’s fashion into modern-day attire is about blending the old with the new. By choosing pieces that echo the past but embrace the present, you can create a look that is both timeless and effortlessly chic. So, next time you’re updating your wardrobe, remember that a little bit of history can go a long way in crafting your signature style.
